    Diversity Makes Logan Square Great.

Many people desire living and working in a multi-cultural community and being surrounded by people who accept them. Logan Square is a place where people from all backgrounds: artists to MBAs, students to retirees are welcome.

Freedom of expression is championed in Logan Square in venues, such as the comfort station and cafe mustache, as well as, random spots along the boulevards, side streets and alleys.

Businesses such as Revolution Brewing, Lula Cafe and Twisted Scissors are examples of how small business can thrive in communities by creating opportunities for residents to get together.

Organizations such as Friends of Bloomingdale Trail, Logan Square Neighborhood Association and Logan Square Preservation have played important roles in preserving affordable housing and safeguarding our historic identity.

Walking along the boulevards and Bloomingdale Trail is a unique experience. However, the everyday oddities and encounters that make Logan Square special might be so familiar that they get taken for granted.

The goal of this book is to remind us of what we love about Logan Square, stoke a dialogue about gentrification and inspire people to take action to preserve the things that make Logan Square a great place to live for everyone.

    Manifiesto

  • Past Event - 2/23 Author Talk via Zoom

In a news landscape dominated by COVID and politics, it's becoming harder to find stories about our communities. That's why I made this book, #LGNSQ. The Logan Square Book is about vernacular architecture, street art, mom-and-pop shops, and more. The stories are not on the level of breaking news, but this is the stuff that we live with every day and form our reality.

On February 23, Friends of the Logan Square Chicago Public Library hosted a talk with LGNSQ photographers, David Schalliol and Joerg Metzer, and writer, Ines Bellina. Moderator was Khloe Karova.

I bought my single-family home on Spaulding and Dickens in March 1997 after getting priced out of Wicker Park. I was 24 and this was my first home so I moved in with not much more than a bed and few chairs. My mother came to visit that spring and noticed the grass was getting tall. Since I didn't own a lawn mover, she stopped someone walking by and asked him to help us mow the grass. He immediately agreed without asking questions and a few minutes later came by with a push mower. Helping each other seems second-nature here. I love Logan Square.

Amo Logan Square.

My favorite memory of Logan Square isn’t a single moment. It’s a combination of fifteen years on what has come to be known as the "Bloomingdale Trail," from the first bonfire-lit nights I spent on the tracks in the early 2000s to the conversations I’ve had in the park while working on this project. Together, these memories are my anchor for my connection to the neighborhood and its surroundings.

Having moved to Chicago after attending Massachusetts College of Art for photography, I quickly found my home in Logan Square at Kedzie Blvd and Palmer Sq. At the time, Logan was a distant outpost of then buzzing arts hub, Wicker Park. Logan Square drew creative people who needed greater housing value and wanted to be part of shared mindset with an ethnically diverse population. Two decades later Logan Square remains a neighborhood that stands for values, but has grown to represent a unique Chicago community where diverse environmental, artistic, economic and urban development interests are learning to co-exist.

I moved to Chicago to be closer to my family and while achieving that I have also become closer to the always inspiring and fully empowering community of Logan Square. Before I went to South America last winter, two neighbors helped me learn Spanish. When my niece needed to stay at my apartment over the summer neighbors offered me their toys to help keep her entertained. The sense of support that this neighborhood instills in its residents is like none other. I love working on this project and getting to know more about the community and discovering all of the amazing people that make Logan Square a wonderful place to live.

My first memory of Logan Square was driving down Milwaukee Avenue on a clear, but cold, winter day while working on a project for XM Satellite Radio. I was with one of the station’s Rock programmers, Charlie Logan, who, allegedly, traced his name back to General John A. Logan, for whom Logan square is named. I will never forget LOGAN Theater’s looming neon letters and circling the column in heavy traffic.

These days I love exploring the neighborhood on my bike or long walks.

As a German transplant, Logan Square reminds me of Berlin-Kreuzberg, where I hung out in the late 80’s. Photographing public art and random stuff for the LGNSQ Book project reminds me of the energy and renegade art scene of that time and place.

After four years of living in Chicago, everything in my life was going wrong: I had split up from my partner, I was stuck in a dead end job, and I had very few friends I could call to commiserate. In desperate need of a change, I decided to move and turn my sights to neighborhoods that reminded me of what I loved about the city. The border of Logan Square/Avondale was it. As a longtime city dweller with no driver’s license, I love that I have Michelin-starred restaurants and corner bodegas, indie bookstores and dollar stores, art galleries and street fairs, all within walking distance.

I was designing a book for the artist Jeanne Dunning back in the 1999 and needed to deliver the printers proofs to her home. She lived on Kimball and Fullerton in Logan Square. I remember thinking to myself, “This is SO far away!" Little did I know how close it REALLY was, or that artists are ALWAYS the first to find the next up and coming neighborhood.

In September of 2009, I packed up my life and set out with my dog Cali to start a new life in Chicago. My first apartment in the city was a small studio above the Café Con Leche on Milwaukee Ave. I had no idea how lucky I was at the time to land in the middle of Logan Square. I spent my days strolling the boulevards and frequenting the Logan Theater. Although I've moved south into Humboldt Park, I still pop into the Café Con Leche when I'm feeling nostalgic to remind myself of my early doe-eyed days in the city.

When I think about Logan Square I think about the connections that are made there. A reading at Cole's or a cup of coffee at Cafe Mustache leads to a conversation, which engenders an opportunity to create something, which begets a friendship. And those friendships stretch across the neighborhood and time, growing deeper and coming back around to themselves until we’re all intertwined. Many of us have moved to Chicago in search of an identity, and in that search we found our voice in the kinetic and diverse energy that always has, and always will be, intrinsic to Logan Square.
